Interested in making your own body mist and perfume spray? Cyclomethicone is the perfect choice!

cyclomethicone DIY bath body sprays

DIY all your body mist and perfume sprays!!

Did you know that you can make more than just one skin and body care product with just one main ingredient?   Cyclomethicone is the perfect choice!

We were the first to bring you this product and we want to share with you many of its wonderful uses, so that you can enhance your personal care products!

Cyclomethicone is an odorless, clear silicone. Cyclomethicone is used to blend with fragrance oils and perfume oils. When sprayed on the skin it leaves a silky-smooth feel. Cyclomethicone is ideal for lotions, creams, hair care, bath salts, linen sprays, body sprays and more!Cyclomethicone

Cyclomethicone stays completely blended and crystal clear without shaking in most fragrances. This product will produce a luxurious body spray that feels dry. Cyclomethicone is used in a wide variety of cosmetic applications such as antiperspirants, deodorants, lotions, creams, bath oils, makeup and nail polish. It will work as a wet hair detangler and dry hair defrizzing additive. It is also a common component in hair shine products.

Cyclomethicone evaporate quickly after helping to carry oils into the top layer of epidermis. From there, they may be absorbed by the skin. Cyclomethicone performs a similar function in hair care products by helping nutrients enter the hair shaft.

Making Sprayscyclomethicone sprays and lotions

For making clear sprays, pour Cyclomethicone in a bottle and add fragrance oil. Use in ratios of fragrance oil to Cyclomethicone from 1:3, to 1:6, or greater. Cyclomethicone blended with fragrance oils are bottled in PET containers with a fine mist sprayer. Do not use PVC as the fragrance oil will tend to breakdown and degrade the PVC.

Your options are endless with sprays! Try out a new fragrance around the house by making room spray. It works just like an air freshener, just simply spray into the air to give a pleasant fragrance to the entire room. If you’ve found one that you really like for your home, why not use one in the car?

TGIF – Some Tips to Treat Yourself…cause it’s FRIDAY!!

Happy Weekend from the Chemistry Store

We decided to treat ourselves as well as all of our loyal fans and customers!

Every Friday we will devote to TFIG!  We will talk about the week and how good, bad or indifferent it was and how we handled it!

So we all know that TGIF is the end of the week but did you know this…

The name comes from the initials of the popular phrase “Thank God It’s Friday“, however, the stars of the lineup touted the abbreviation as meaning “Thank Goodness It’s Funny.”  TGIF is the name of a defunct American prime time television programming block that aired on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC)  This is according to Wikipedia.

Today, you’re more likely to hear people use the abbreviated version of the saying – “TGIF.” But, when saying the whole phrase, some may choose to either say “Thank Goodness It’s Friday” or “Thank God It’s Friday” – based on their personal preference and/or beliefs.  Interesting…bottom line is IT’S FRIDAY!!

Let’s get ready for the weekend!

Friday can be a tricky day. On one hand you are super motivated because it is the last working day before the weekend (at least for most of us), but on the other hand it can turn out to be very stressful because there are still emails to respond to, deadlines to meet and reports to close.  Sound familiar?

Just to make sure that you make it to the weekend with the right mood, we want to share some stress-free ideas and ways to treat yourself with, so you can say… “Why not, today is Friday, I deserve it!”

Just try one or two and let us know how it works out!!!

Casual Friday: Dress like you want!  Put on comfy clothes, denim outfits or trainers. Or the exact opposite! Finally put on those nice heels or new outfit, showing your individual personality and style!  Still by far number one on the TGIF list!

Flavorful: give an extra touch, wear perfume! Why not? It’s Friday! And you can bet on who will notice it.  This one works!!!

1 Croissant?  Once in a while pause your diet and treat yourself to that yummy croissant next to a foamy cappuccino. Or a chocolate chip muffin! Go ahead and kick-start to your day!

Car sharing: Instead of punishing yourself with overcrowded buses, use comfortable car sharing services once a week!  This one is for all you “City” workers!!!

Sushi? Good sushi isn’t cheap, but boy is it good!   It relieves stress, how? humm dunno!!

Take a stroll: Exercise can boost your mood so take a quick walk to the nearest park and absorb those sun-rays.  Yes vitamin D…you will feel better!

DIY Hot Process Soap for Mother’s Day!

creative hot process soapsWhat is the difference between Cold Process and Hot Process Soap?

The main difference between the cold process and hot process methods is temperature. In cold process, hot oils and lye are combined to initiate the saponification process.  Hot process soaping is fantastic and quick!  This method gives results in a style by design bar of soap.

In hot process, hot oils and lye are combined to begin saponification, and then introduced to heat via a Crock Pot or double boiler.   Unlike the Cold Process where the hot oils are combined with the lye to initiate the saponification process; then set aside for several days.hot process soap recipes

The additional heat speeds up the saponification process and “cooks” the soap before it goes into the mold. The wait time is cut dramatically! Make sure when making hot process soap, that your recipe does not fill up the Crock Pot more than halfway. Hot process soap tends to expand, and you don’t want it overflowing!

We have simplified the recipes for beginners and/or the experienced soap makers!

Basic Hot Process Soap Making Terms

And What They Mean…

Hot process and cold process soap making are similar in many ways, so many of the terms that we use for cold process apply to hot process as well. If you’re just getting in to making hot process soap, however, you may have noticed some terms that are strange or are used differently when related to hot process. Awhile back we gave you a list of basic cold process soap making terms, and here we’ve done the same for hot process! This list includes terms that are specific to hot process or have slightly different meanings.

DIY Cold Process Soap for Mother’s Day!

What is cold process soap?  DIY hand made cold process soap

Cold Process soap making is the act of mixing fixed oils (common oils include Olive, Coconut and Palm) with an alkali (Sodium Hydroxide or Lye). The result is a chemical process called saponification, where the composition of the oils change with the help of the lye to create a bar of soap.

When starting to make cold process soap, it can be tempting to take the “go big or go home,” approach. Most new soap makers often want to start first with layers, swirls and fragrances. All the fancy in the beginning!  This is completely understandable because you want to be the one that makes that eye-catching soap!  Be safe not sorry so we recommend starting with a very basic recipe.  We highly recommend sticking to the three most basic soaping oils: olive, coconut and palm.

You must keep in mind that there is a lot to learn when making your first batch of cold process soap. First, and more importantly you need to learn how to safely mix your lye solution. Secondly, you need to correctly mix and measure your soap making oils. You will soon learn that in the first batch you will know what trace looks and “feels” like. In addition, we recommend you line your mold.

When just starting out don’t get overwhelmed and don’t  overload yourself. Some beginner soap makers become discouraged right off the bat, because they attempt techniques that even advanced soap makers have not perfected yet!  Set yourself up for success not failure!!   Just stick to the basics!  We have a wonderful guide and some great recipes for you to try!

Need A Guide to Scenting Handmade Soap?

Chemistry Store guide for oilsDo you ever think about using a guide to help with the finding the right scent for your skin care products?

Well you can never have too many guides and points of reference!!

natural skin care chemistry store article

Making your own handmade soap

This is a thrilling process, and one of the most exciting things about it is creating your own special scented soap. It makes you feel a bit like a fragrance tycoon when you create your own soap fragrances. If you want to wow others with your own signature scented soap, follow these tips for scenting your soap batches.

Choose Your Oil Type

There are two types of oil you can use to scent your soap. Essential oils are the longer-lasting of the two types. Essential Oils are made from natural substances, which makes them safe for almost everyone to use. They are also the stronger of the two types. On the other hand, fragrance oils are less expensive than essential oils, however; they are weaker.

Time to Get Creative

The possibilities for creating scents are infinite. The basic concept you need to understand is that every scent has a bass note, a middle note and a top note. You will need to experiment and combine these three notes together to achieve your dream scent.

Start simply by combining three fragrances together, using one scent for each note. When you start to gain experience, you can start blending multiple fragrances together for each note. This creates a more layered effect that can make scented soaps just as complex and intoxicating as the best perfumes on the market.

Don’t forget to wear gloves when you are mixing up your scents. If you get one of these oils on your skin, it could be days before you can completely remove the scent from your body. When you are done mixing a scent, don’t forget to add a preservative to maintain your scent and keep the oils from going bad.

Adding Scent to Soap

Once you have your scent just right, you can add it to your soap. The general rule of thumb is to add a 1/2 ounce of fragrance for every 1 pound of soap you are making.

There are two ways to add the scent

You can add it during the initial soap-making process, but the heat will cause some of the fragrance to burn off. The more efficient method is to wait until the soap is done but still soft. At this point, you knead the scent into the soap. Make sure to wear gloves when you do this or use a paddle to avoid getting the oil on your skin.

Basic Melt & Pour

It is so easy.  Find the right recipe here.  Just cut off the amount you need, melt it down in the microwave or in a double-boiler, add fragrance and/or essential oil, color and pour. You’ll be an expert in no time at all.

While there are tons of fragrance oils to choose from at the Chemistry Store, the personal care industry is all about standing out and creating products unique to you. One easy way to set your soap, bath and body products, or perfume apart is to create your own signature scents by combining fragrances or essential oils. That can be intimidating at first, but once you get started crafting unique blends is a lot of fun! We’ll help you out with some guidelines for blending fragrances, but remember in the end it’s all a matter of personal preference!

natural butter oilsDIY handmade lotion is perfect for healing those dry scaly hands!!

Shea Lotion

natural shea butter Shea butter is the gold standard for healing cracked, dry and irritated winter skin. The liquid shea oil, also known as shea butter, is obtained through a process of cold pressing the fruit seeds of the karite tree. From there, the oil is fractionated, and the liquid oleins are separated for use in lotions. When used in lotion, shea butter offers anti-inflammatory effects due to its natural phytosterol content.

Grape Seed Oilnatural grape seed oil

Grape Seed Oil is often overlooked when it comes to natural lotion ingredients. However, it is beneficial for winter skin due to its fatty acids, which are easily able to penetrate skin. It contains linoleic acid that helps aid in normal cell functioning, such as growth and repair. Grape seed oil helps lotions spread well on skin and penetrate for added moisturizing.

Sweet Almond Oil

natural sweet almond oil

Almonds are rich in vitamin E, which is known to heal red, irritated and dry skin. Vitamin E can also reduce scarring from surgical procedures, cuts, scrapes and other skin wounds. Sweet almond oil allows the lotion to glide across skin and penetrate for deep conditioning. Lotions made with sweet almond oil can also be used as a lip balm to help relieve dry, chapped and cracked lips.

Let’s face it, during winter we pledge to find the thickest, richest body butter and promise to give our skin some TLC. But underneath the tights, socks, leggings, hats, sweaters and scarves we often neglect our skin, not giving it the moisture or attention it deserves.

This means Spring can throw a curve in the weather and surprise us with a beautiful Spring day.  This sudden change in the weather will catch our skin a little off-guard!!

Start reviving your skin by using some of these products and methods to get your skin ready for Spring!

Cleansinghandmade natural soap

During the Spring-time transition, it is important to replenish your skin of the moisture lost during the winter months.  Avoid harsh cleansers.  Sometimes the more a cleanser/ body wash foams or lathers, the more drying it can be for your skin. Foaming agents often contain chemicals that strip the skin of its natural oils.  Check out the Chemistry Store’s natural skin care products!

Try DIY facial cleanser that is gentler, you will not get the added chemicals you are used to, but your skin will thank you!

Easter Good to know!

Easter is one of those holidays that fall on the same date each year. The timing of Easter changes based on the lunar calendar and  is based on the phases of the moon. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, around March 21. Easter takes place between March 22 and April 25. While Easter has its roots in religion, it has secular traditions as well. Many cherished Easter traditions have been around for centuries.
The Easter BunEaster Bunny with eggs weekly roundupny is said to deliver decorated eggs and candy to children on the Sunday morning of the holiday. The exact origins are unclear but were first reported to have arrived in America in the 1700s when German settlers left out nests at Easter. The nests were filled with colorful eggs to mark the day.Easter Weely Roundup

Easter eggs are another tradition. The Christian tradition said the eggs represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb. The egg is an ancient symbol of new life and is associated with festivals celebrating spring. Others simply decorate the eggs to place in their Easter basket or hide them for a holiday hunt. Easter egg hunts and Easter egg rolls are also popular, with the White House hosting its annual roll since 1878.

Candy sales on Easter are huge, ranking second behind Halloween!! Chocolate bunnies and eggs, as well as jelly beans, are among the most popular items. The famous Peeps have been the top non-chocolate Easter candy for the past decade! The Peeps were handmade starting  out with chick shapes and later other colors and shapes were introduced.Easter Bunny with eggs weekly roundup

Three Reasons Why Handmade Soap Makes a Great Gift

bunny and chick on towel
DIY handmade soap is so much more than just soap!  It doesn’t have to be a struggle trying to find that perfect gift for the seasonal holidays!

During the seasonal times of year, many shoppers are finding it difficult to choose just the right gift for their loved ones. If you are struggling to think of a great holiday or birthday gift,  handmade soap can be an ideal choice for several reasons.

Hand-made soap will not collect dust!

It won’t collect dust. A lot of holiday or birthday gifts end up shoved into a closet or gathering dust on a shelf somewhere. Unwanted and unused gifts can become a bone of contention between friends, especially if the recipient feels obligated to keep or display a gift that they did not really like. If the gift is large or in bad taste, the problem only magnifies, and resentment can gain a foothold.

DIY hand made soap

Soap is used in every household!

Each holiday season, people receive gifts that they have absolutely no use for. These items are often re-gifted or simply thrown away. Hand-made soaps will not go to waste but will be a welcome gift, no matter who the recipient is.diy holiday liquid hand soap

Everyone needs hand soaps in the bathroom and at the kitchen sink, and the vast majority of ladies would appreciate a wonderful bar of body wash soap. Men may prefer a masculine scent such as pine or  peppermint.

Hand-made soap is a personal gift!

The gift-giver can tailor the gift to the recipient by adding his or her preferred scent or using a  mold that signifies something of their personal taste. You can even make unscented soap for those with sensitive noses as unscented soap is notoriously hard to find. This will make the recipient feel special and ensure that their gift is used and appreciated.

Giving out hand-made soaps on holidays or birthday gifts is a great idea for those on your list. Not only will you be giving something useful, but you can rest assured that your gift will be personal and appreciated by the recipient.

Please note that we do not  want to offend anybody…it is the thought that counts!!  If you have a funny gifting story you would like to share, we would love to hear about it! Remember have fun and enjoy DIY crafting!

milky way easter soap baskets

If you are looking for unique ways to promote your soap-making and beauty products, think about inspiring others to delve into the art of creating unique personal care items. Creating gift sets that include the materials, molds and packaging needed to get started, you can provide a simple introduction that can lead to ongoing interest. As your customers are able to experiment on a small scale with affordable products, they can further expand their interests with additional merchandise offered by your company.

Young Crafters

soapy crayons with soapy critters soapAn excellent avenue for encouraging an interest in your craft is addressing the needs and creativity of youngsters. Craft sets are popular as holiday and birthday gifts. They also provide excellent options for summer vacation activities. Girls in the upper elementary and middle school age ranges are particularly great subjects as they enjoy products like flavored lip balms and fun bath gels. Developing a series of sets that will allow them to make their own products can lead to ongoing interest.

Important considerations as you develop a kid-friendly set of materials include careful and simple instructions. Create a page that highlights steps in order. Note areas that require adult assistance. Consider developing microwave directions that can limit the need for stovetop activity. Provide parent tips for safety and assistance. Easy projects with limited measuring and management of materials will keep your kits from being too complicated. Young girls may be better able to deal with the filling of lip balm pots over tubes. However, you can create advanced projects for those who have already completed work with your beginners’ kits.

This week we are going to have so much fun using the St. Patrick’s Day theme!!!  Not only St. Patrick’s day but we will be doing some different things toward the end of the week.

Do you know why you have to wear green on St Patrick’s Day?

  • According to Christian Monitor St. Patrick’s revelers thought wearing green made one invisible to leprechauns, fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see (anyone not wearing green). People began pinching those who didn’t wear green as a reminder that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers!!!

Do you know what Saint Patrick did?

  • According to National Geographic, St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, according to legend. However, today we understand that Ireland is snake less because of its climate and the water that surrounds it is too cold for British snakes to migrate over. The snakes are believed to be symbols for the pagan religions.

Do you know when St Patrick’s Day is?

  • St Patrick is one of Ireland’s patron saints and many Americans with Irish ancestry remember him on March 17. Patrick’s Day is fixed on March 17, but may occasionally be moved by Catholic Church authorities.  Honestly, most people celebrate all week!!!  That’s what is so fun about this holiday!!

Do you know where St Patrick’s Day came from?

  • Saint Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, “the Day of the Festival of Patrick”), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick ( c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.
