We are starting a healthier cleaning products series that will cover a lot of ways to use essential oils in our everyday lives!
The only way to really see if essential oils are all they are cracked up to be is by creating formulas and recipes; and to use them, but first you need to know about them and which ones are good for cleaning!
Essential Oils are useful in the practice of aromatherapy. Essential oil is not actually an oil, but the natural product extracted from the bark, flower, fruit, leaf or root. They deliver positive benefits to the body through smell and direct absorption into the skin.
Benefits of essential oil include soothing, calming, stimulating, refreshing, centering, and warming to the system.
They are sourced from all over the world in their purest state. Essential Oils are extremely potent and should never be used directly on the skin, as the liquid may cause irritation to the skin.
This week we will be creating recipes like the ones from Kasey Schwartz. She talks about essential oils at length in her new book and has some good pointers! It is amazing how many ways you can use essential oils so we decided to put together recipes using our ingredients and essential oils from the Chemistry Store. We of course, would highly recommend you purchase the essential oils and other ingredients from us but we understand that the choice is completely up to the crafters themselves!
Now according to Kasey Schwartz, these are some of the top essential oils used for cleaning and remedies.
Java Citronella is an essential oil obtained from the leaves and stems of the cymbopogon plant commonly known as lemongrass. The two active ingredients in citronella, geraniol and citronellol, are both antiseptics having multiple uses in disinfectants, soaps, perfumes, and insect repellants.
Clove is extensively used as a domestic spice worldwide. Tincture of cloves has been used for skin infections, scabies, and athlete’s foot.
Eucalyptus Oil has a history of wide application, as a pharmaceutical, antiseptic, repellent, flavouring, fragrance and industrial uses. The leaves of the Eucalyptus are steam distilled to extract Eucalyptus oil.
Lemongrass is known for its invigorating and antiseptic properties. An excellent anti-depressant, this oil tones and fortifies the nervous system which can be used in the bath for soothing muscular nerves and pains.
One of the most popular essential oils, peppermint vitalizes, energizes, and restores the senses. It helps with a variety of complaints including fevers, headaches, migraines, arthritis, and a stimulant.
Tea Tree is an anti-fungal healing oil steam distilled from the Australian Ti (Tea) Tree. Tea tree oil works well for sinus relief, sore throats, and chest-colds as well as topical antiseptics for skin injuries, rubs for arthritis, and inhalants for asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory conditions.
Now you have some good information about some of the many essential oils. We hope this helps you understand how essential oils work and how beneficial they can be in our everyday cleaning routine!
