The
Loofah Gourd is a member of the Cucurbitaceae ( Gourd ) family. The
Loofah is spelled several different ways, i.e., Loofah, Luffa or
Lufa. It's commonly known as the Washrag Gourd. It is the only plant
known that can be raised and used as a sponge. The sponges are very
versatile in that they can be used for bathing, washing dishes or
scrubbing. The Loofah is widely used for bathing to invigorate the
skin as well as gift giving and crafts.
A distant cousin of the cucumber, Loofah's have been cultivated for
bath time luxury for hundreds of years. Our Loofah's are grown
in Guatemala specifically for
The Chemistry Store. They are of the softer variety
and are not as scratchy as normal Loofah sponges. Add them to your
melt & pour soap project or simply include them in your gift
baskets.
All the sponges have a 2-3
inch plus diameter. The sponges are packed
flat and will expand to normal round shape after they have been wet.
Rinse your Loofah in a bath of 2-3 gallons water and 3-4oz bleach. Rinse
thoroughly in fresh water and squeeze out any residual water. Loofah's
are a natural product and will contain some seeds. After they are
expanded, you can tap them on there ends to remove the seeds. |
